Military Sexual Trauma (MST)

Military Sexual Trauma (MST) refers to sexual assault, harassment, or misconduct that occurs during military service.

Within the Canadian Armed Forces, this harm has been acknowledged at a national level through the Heyder‑Beattie Class Action, where nearly 20,000 current and former CAF members came forward with claims of sexual misconduct connected to their service.

These numbers confirm what many already know:

This is not rare.
This is not isolated.

MST can include assault, abuse of rank, coercion, systemic harassment, or violence that occurred in training, on base, or on deployment. When the harm comes from within the ranks, the betrayal can be profound.

Many members stay silent — because of career fear, stigma, unit loyalty, or mistrust of the system.
